I Can’t Sleep!
By Marge Pickering-Picone
I cannot get to sleep. I toss and turn and have every piece of information stored in my brain running through my head. I already did my to-do list and yet I keep re-doing it over and over. I start thinking about things that happened years ago and how I could have handled them differently. I think about the conversation I had with my children and wonder if I said the right things. I keep checking the clock to see that only another hour has passed by. Now, I have a mere four hours left to sleep and I am exhausted. Does this sound like you?
You have tried everything from darkening the room to disconnecting everything that has a glowing light that may disturb you. You play the music you bought specifically to help you sleep. You write down four things you acknowledge yourself for accomplishing that day and turn out the last light. Unfortunately, one hour later your eyes are wide open and your brain starts thinking all kinds of things.
A good night’s sleep is something we all need. Being able to close those eyes and drift into six to eight hours of deep, dream filled zzzz’s. Regrettably, most have “mind talk” that they are unable to quiet or calm down.
When you ask for help with sleep issues, your doctor may recommend an over-the-counter sleep aid or prescription. However, working in a complementary practice, we have learned to ask more detailed questions and find out other problems that started before you had difficulty sleeping. From my experience: exhaustion, stress, lifestyle, eating habits, traumatic events and nervous habits are areas that need to be addressed. To assist with sleep issues, I work to determine vitamin deficiencies as well as help to assess your diet.
Solutions vary from person to person as some respond to better electrolyte levels, while others need one or more of the “B” vitamins. Many have seen improvement using aromatherapy as well.
If you are one of those that has tried everything and still cannot sleep, give us a call. What have you got to lose? We love the challenge and have a passion for solving health problems!
